Wednesday - 13th June

The Thackray Museum in Leeds is a museum of the history of medicine adjacent to St James's Hospital. Since it opened in 1997 it has won "Museum of the Year" and other awards.

Highlights include Life in Victorian Leeds: visitors walk through a reproduction of slum streets complete with authentic sights, sounds and smells and are invited to follow the lives, ailments and treatments of eight Victorian characters, making the choices that determine their survival amongst the rats, fleas and bedbugs. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian Leeds street and see brave developments in surgery and healthcare.

Marks in Time: 1884 - On his first stall, Michael Marks' penny section was the most successful, so he decided everything should be one penny. His slogan became 'Don't ask the price, it's a penny'.

Thomas Spencer invested £300 in Marks' business, becoming his partner in 1894. He brought administration and accountancy skills complimenting Marks' product, marketing and people skills.
