SEARCH ENGINES

A Search Engine is a website that searches for relevant websites based on a keyword entered by the user. All the relevant websites are then ranked and the user then has a list appear of those websites and a brief description. Search Engines take into account the amount of times the keyword is used, how many other websites link to your site and how well the website has been made. During recent years, steps have been made to improve their search criteria, particularly to exclude sites that try to cheat the ranking system (such as entering duplicate pages).

Optimisation
The best way to optimise a website is to have good content. Because of the misuse of meta tags (tags hidden in the code revealing keywords), search engines are now concentrating their ranking systems on the relevance of the website. Different search engines will rank your website in different ways, but you should always aim to get your site within the top 40 of your prime keywords. Once your website is complete, you can submit your website to the different search engines to make them aware of your site. This can take anything from two weeks to three months for the search engine to start showing your site.

Advertising
Search Engine advertising is a good way of making sure users see your website. You can set up an account with a search engine, where you pay a certain amount for every user who views your site through the search engines advertising. Your website will appear in a seperate high section of the website to maximise your chances of your website being seen. However, you cannot, in any way, manipulate the natural ranking of your website by paying for it. The pay-per-click accounts are very good in that you can set a daily budget, a cost per click (obviously the more you are willing to spend per click the more clicks you will receive), delete and create new keywords and even turn the account on or off when you feel like it.
